A month by month reflection on my journey as an apple distinguished educator...

This month has been packed with excitement with the competition of our 2019 ADS Apple Book. I'm really proud of this publication as I took on a totally new design concept and challenge myself to literally step outside the square! This book is full of circles, rather than the standard photos and video's in squares and has 'rolling' pages so that the circles glide seamlessly across the screen. The book was fraught with design challenges and problem solving and I throughly enjoyed the process, as well as learning new skills along the way.

This book has taken on more of a student flavour with all of the illustrations being done by our learners. I love that this has also built Julies skill set as she has had to learn how to use Instant Alpha to remove backgrounds. Getting high quality recording is still an ongoing issue for us so is something that we will definitely work on. Using Quicktime player and our Mac has definitely produced better sound quality than the iPad alone but I am also wanting to role model how easily Julie could be producing books with her students so need to find an alternative to using the Mac.

We had a visit to our school from the Principal of Ravensbourne School (Adele Lidgard) Adele was interested in seeing our student agency in relation to Seesaw and also to see the Makerspace in action. I have mentored Adele to run her whole school programme (with under 30 children) on an Inquiry and student led Maker philosophy. Adele was previously a DP at a local school here in the BOP and we have facilitated several collaborative projects together in the past.

A local Author (Rebecca Larsen) visited me to pitch an idea about our students bringing her latest book to life digitally. Rebecca had been present at last years MADE Awards event and seen examples of our students creativity bought to life digitally. I have passed this challenge onto Jo Weldon and Alex Walker, they teach collaboratively in a Year 2/3 space and will support their learners to do something amazing with this beautiful Matariki tale.
